Bastababae | A Next-Generation Approach in Revolutionizing Retail – Let’s Talk Retail Episode 37 | Taking over a family business as the next-generation leader is undoubtedly a high-pressure endeavor, but it’s not just about responsibility; it also requires a clear and positive mindset regarding how you intend to engage in and manage the business.
Jansen Ivan Uy, the General Manager of Savers Appliances, a prominent name in the appliance retail industry, skillfully navigated the pressure that comes with joining a family business. He ensured he was well-prepared and equipped to assume leadership before entering the family enterprise.
In an upcoming episode of the highly acclaimed podcast, “Let’s Talk Retail,” he shares his journey. Jansen began his exposure to the business at a young age, where he discovered a genuine passion for working with people. It was these daily interactions with individuals that piqued his interest and led him to decide to join the family business.
While his family encouraged him to join the business immediately, Jansen recognized the value of gaining external experience from the corporate world before diving into the family enterprise. Reflecting on his corporate experience, he emphasized, “Corporate operations are highly structured. Well-established departments play a crucial role in ensuring business sustainability and continuity.”
When asked about the challenges and adjustments he faced, he acknowledged, “Yes, there were challenges. Many of our managers were long-serving employees with deep roots in the company. Introducing new structures to an already established environment proved to be a significant challenge when I first arrived. My initial approach was to step back, observe, and understand how things were being done. As a newcomer, my strategy was to learn what was successful and then gradually implement changes in line with our objectives.”
